Force Face Waratahs’ Young Guns in the Perth Decider
Venue: Scotch College Playing Fields, Perth | Date/Time: 3 October, 4:30 PM AEST | Referee: TBC
The Lowdown
Déjà vu, with the roles swapped. Last year the Waratahs rocked up to Perth on a 2-1 regular-season record and left with the trophy after a 33-26 win. This year they are back on the same flight with the same 2-1 record, but the Force have the home ground, a grudge and a 17-12 Round 3 win in their back pocket.
The Force look like the juggernaut here. They made one change to the side that beat NSW. Harry McLaughlin-Phillips takes the 10 jersey fresh from Wallabies camp. He is the bloke who scored a try and slotted the match-winning conversion after the siren on his Force debut against the Reds. Kurtley Beale, a 95-Test Wallaby, slides back to inside centre alongside Boston Fakafanua. Nathan Hastie, the competition’s top try-scorer, runs the show at nine. Misinale Epenisa, the 2026 Rising Star winner, anchors the scrum. Add Wallabies Tom Robertson and Dylan Pietsch, plus James O’Connor on the bench, and this is a side loaded with firepower. The Force are also hunting their first major trophy since the 2019 NRC Grand Final, and that drought will be on their minds.

There is a proper local flavour too. Four members of Cottesloe’s Fortescue Premier Grade-winning side are in the 23, including starting lock Zak Healey.
The Waratahs are the desperate side, and they are wearing it on their sleeves. They made seven changes after the Round 3 loss, and only three of the starting XV are 2026 Super Rugby Pacific players. The rest are seven Academy players and five Shute Shield players. Fullback Sid Harvey is out injured, so Latrell Smiler-Ah Kiong, who scored in both of his first two games, steps in at 15. Otto Serfontein shifts to the left wing and Freedom Vahaakolo to the right.
The youth movement is the story:
- Teddy Wilson (23) returns at nine after three tries in the first two rounds.
- Charlie Bird (19), a Junior World Championships rep for Australia U20s, makes his first start at inside centre. He also captained Randwick Colts to a 55-21 Grand Final win over Gordon this month.
- Isaac Fonua (19) starts at number 8 for the third straight week.
- Nick Chan (25) arrives at outside centre after two seasons with RFC Los Angeles and California Legion.
The one familiar face across the ruck is Max Burey, the 2025 Super Rugby AUS player of the year. He now lines up against his old club for the second time in two weeks.
Head coach Lachlan McCaffrey, in the Waratahs’ own team announcement, reckons a loss like the Round 3 one is better Grand Final prep than a win. He backs a hungry bunch of Academy and Shute Shield kids, and he has Eamon Doyle captaining from lock. The bench brings some grunt in Folau Faingaa, Angus Scott-Young and Luke Reimer, plus former Australia Sevens man Hadley Tonga for backs cover.
Where it gets decided: it is the Force’s settled, Wallabies-laced spine against a rebuilt Waratahs pack and midfield. Half of NSW’s forwards and centres are new to this line-up, so the Force will target the set piece and the gaps between those fresh partnerships. The Tahs’ best route is Burey and Wilson finding room early, and that is a big ask.
Getting there: entry is free. The day is a double-header, with Game 2 of the North vs South Women’s Series at 2:00 PM AEST before the main event. Parking at Scotch is limited because the Perth Royal Show is on at nearby Claremont Showgrounds, so take public transport. If you are watching from home, catch it live on Stan Sport or the rugby.com.au YouTube channel, and check the Grand Final squads confirmed via Rugby.com.au for late changes.

Prediction
Youth and hunger count for plenty in a final, and the Waratahs have beaten the Force in Perth before. But the Force have the continuity, the home crowd and the Wallabies quality, and NSW are asking teenagers and club players to win a title on the road. Expect the Waratahs to hang in for a half before the Force experience tells.
Prediction: Western Force by 12

Does anyone know what happened to Amatosero?
Hot potato in the backburner doesn’t go down well Basos, need to run him hard like a pig dog behind the wagon for a year or two until he looses the anger the fight.
Nothing official Basos but have heard he’s done a hammy.
It thought it was illegal for tight forwards to do those but then that’s why Canham missed the last WBs match too
Thanks jeznez
Force certainly stuck it up the Tah’s far canal.
Yes few of us on here have been staunch FORCE supporters through and through
No one can not say i havnt consistently backed the force as my number one team.
Well done fellas but what’s this grand final shit stone the flaming crows its the final
“ stone the flaming crows its the final”
Language, eh? Next you’ll be calling thongs jandals.
Wow. Go the Force. Hope it flows through to SRP 2027,
Wheres Simon cron from
Hes allowed legend anyway
Same place they all leave to be somewhere better.
Hahaha true
Time to tossers is lost time..
Is that Farcanal English elchapo
Farcs, did someone, somehow, forget to pay appropriate homage to the Land of the Long White Attention Seekers?
Don’t know why ewe lot bang on about newzealand I’ve been in wa and bali 30 years i never talk nz up. Thanks for some love Ken mirt and co are ignoring me it really cuts me up feeling a bit fragile.
Go wallaby’s we got this
Well played Force. Clinical by them today.
Very deserved champions
Go you good thing
Force killing it.
Reimer really needs to improve his defence
Come back is on
Kurtley is having a huge game
Ekanayake on, noice
Love the commentators saying he’s a Force pathways product.
He signed with them in June 😂
Can we claim Burey at least?
Indeed you can
Nicely worked!
I think the Tahs would be more properly attired in dark blue with white stripes
Aprons that is
Suggesting they are butchers, Mirt?
Tahs have 4 players with Super Rugby caps, Force have 8.
• Kurtley Beale: 186 caps
• Tom Robertson: 100 caps
• Will Harris: 81 caps
• Kane Koteka: 46 caps
• Mac Grealy: 45 caps
• Dylan Pietsch: ~35 caps
• Nic Dolly: ~15 caps
• Harry McLaughlin-Phillips: ~12 caps
Tahs:
• Tom Lambert: 30 caps
• Max Burey: ~15 caps
• Teddy Wilson: ~12 caps
• Ethan Dobbins: ~8 caps
Tahs lifting the experience with Fainga’a and Reimer coming on.
Suspect Scott-Young won’t be too far away either.
Am looking forward to seeing Tonga get on at some stage
True.
137 Wallaby caps in the Force, Zero in the Tahs.
• Kurtley Beale: 95 caps (Wallaby #836)
• Tom Robertson: 31 caps (Wallaby #901)
• Dylan Pietsch: 11 caps (Wallaby #978)
Well thats a good turn around
Yeah, poor downtrodden underdogs, the Tahs.
Wish the Tahs could have converted that last effort.
Not been going my team’s way but still a really enjoyable match.
Bring on the second half.
Big gap in experience between the two starting 15s and Force playing so well on top of that.
Very good half for the men from the West.
Nice try
Force way too good at the moment
Hastie gets through a lot of defence
Ahhh Burey, still pushes it a bit sometimes
Who’s coaching the Tahs till Chek arrives?
Lachie McCaffrey is head coach. Jake Gordon and Jack Deb have been co-coaching the attack (since Catt left)
There is an obvious coaching vacuum in comparison to Cron’s obvious organisation of the Force.
With D looking optional at times in this comp…do you think the emphasis on attacking as opposed to D, serves the Wallabies…or Super Rugby…
Seems to be – 11 v 15 last week and they were still hanging on
Force killing it!
Great kick…a bit of a breeze?
Looks like a nice day in the west
It always is
What a ball from Kurtley, with the wallaby centres cupboard looking bare maybe a call up?
On the bench?
There are worse options, he looks 10 years younger than last year
Saw last week’s game in the flesh. Kurtley and Dylan stood out on a dire day.
How come Pietsch isn’t in the Wallabies squad…?
Not clear, I assume they want to ease him back in
Great day for it, Force backs look sharp
Dang. Very good try Force.
Nice structure and the a ripper of a pass from Beale to Pietsch
All Force so far
Glad the teams are running this way first. Keen for the Langi/Robertson scrum contest
