Live match Thread: Wallabies vs Springboks: Perth Preview & Prediction

Bok Blitz Looms as Wallabies Bank on a Bold Backline

Venue: Optus Stadium, Perth | Date/Time: 27 September, 7:45pm AEST | Referee: Andrea Piardi

The Lowdown

Rassie Erasmus has torn up the Baltimore blueprint. Fresh off beating the All Blacks 43-28 to claim the inaugural Rugby’s Greatest Rivalry trophy, the Boks coach has made 13 changes to that starting side — only Eben Etzebeth and Ethan Hooker keep their jerseys. Nine of the match-23 were involved in that Baltimore win, so this isn’t a second-string outfit, it’s a rotation with serious depth behind it.

The headline act is at captain. Andre Esterhuizen becomes the 68th man to lead South Africa, a hybrid centre-loose forward who’s earned the armband on the back of his form for the Sharks. Etzebeth, meanwhile, will take the field on 147 caps, extending his own record as the most-capped Springbok ever, while Malcolm Marx, the reigning World Rugby and SA Player of the Year, is six caps shy of triple figures off the bench. Jasper Wiese brings up his half-century of Tests the same way. Pieter-Steph du Toit and Damian de Allende have been sent home to rest, a nod to a brutal recent workload rather than any loss of form.

Across the field, Les Kiss has thrown a genuine curveball. Joseph-Aukuso Suaalii starts on the wing against the Springboks for the first time, Len Ikitau shifts out to outside centre, and Hunter Paisami, prized for his ability to carry the ball flat and still find the right option, partners him at 12. The bigger talking point is the bench: a 6/2 forwards-backs split, the first of the Kiss era(can someone find a previous game we did this). It loads up physicality for the closing stages but leaves Ben Donaldson without a recognised fly-half or fullback behind him, if he goes down, it’s Lonergan, Harry Wilson or Tupou stepping in on the fly.

Here’s the candid bit: the numbers actually flatter Australia. They’ve scored 30 tries in their last five outings to South Africa’s 16, with a +95 points differential against the Boks’ +17, and they’ve started fast, racing to 10 points first in all five. But that run came against Argentina, Japan and Italy, not the All Blacks three times running, which is South Africa’s recent diet. Add in the so-called Armageddon Squad waiting on the Springbok bench, Marx, Ox Nché, Lood de Jager and Wiese among them, and the form line looks a lot less one-sided than the try count suggests. History backs that read too: this fixture is 97 Tests deep, South Africa lead 53-41 with three draws, and remarkably, Perth itself has been dead even, 4 wins apiece with 2 draws across ten meetings here, though the Boks took the most recent one 30-12 in 2024.

South Africa, ranked world No. 1 to Australia’s No. 7, remain overwhelming favourites. Erasmus himself has been careful not to undersell the hosts, pointing out that Australia poses a completely different threat to New Zealand and arrives full of momentum, with physical forwards and an exciting backline of their own. Kiss, for his part, has leaned into the occasion, framing a Test against the top-ranked side in the world as exactly the kind of challenge that sharpens a group. Around the fanbase, the mood is split down the middle, genuine excitement about the new-look back three and Ikitau’s switch to 13, real nerves about that bare cupboard at fly-half, and at least one camp openly bracing for the Nuclear Bomb Squad to blow the game open in the last quarter.

Prediction

South Africa’s cap count, bench firepower and record of shutting down comebacks in this fixture make them the side to beat, even with the market trimming their price through the week. Australia’s line speed and early-game aggression should make this competitive into the third quarter, but the Boks’ extra gears late on should tell. Prediction: South Africa by 3 (though The Underdog while be howling for the opposite).

Well you could also thank Andrea, the in game comms manager, and our fan favourite BOK chiming in from Planet Ben for the furore.

Watched the replay, Suaalii had a great game. I don’t think there is any argument now that he should be on the wing.

Yes we can. Isaac Henry can fill in. We beat Boos last year without BobbyV
We beat Boks last night without a Canham or Gordon or Skelton. Lenny is one of my first picked. He’s our top 13. Lonergan is our 9. Still not sold on Hunter, thought his recent play has been excellent.

I’d like to see Henry at 12 inside Len at 13. While Hunter has improved, he’s still taking the wrong option too frequently, and is a penalty magnet at the wrong moment in big games.

Wash your mouth out course they can can beat a 2 string boks with 10 players and 4 officials can beat the blacks.

Outstanding by the WB’s.
Pity we can’t say the same about the officials & World Rugby who are their boss. How embarrassing for them, the phone on the field will be a laughing stock for a long while. How did they not have a backup for the ref comms apart from a mobile?

How good did Lonergan play! His goal kicking and out of hand kicking has been brilliant!
At the start of this year I thought he had a question mark in his spot on the team, but now he’s one of the first picked. Good to see! I thought Lukan was huge too!

Just finished the replay.
Never have I seen a referee lose control of an international game like that.
This could be a big turning point for the Wallabies, 11 held 15 out when it mattered.
Well done boys

Paisami’s question mark popped up in one crucial tackle. The squad needs a little de-Redding.Donno went ok all up but he won’t get away with another sleepy start like that one.

So deserved in the win they had it all over the park ,I’m not sure wether wallaby’s have clicked and played an excellent low mistake high possession game or the boks run on side was lacking or both.
But it’s a extremely good win and I’m happy well done

Doleman did well to control the Etzebeth nonsense but also missed Hooker clearly in touch. BOK cost us a yc on Sualii for no reason. He clearly wanted to be the centre of attention

With loss of comms, the default position is simple. Signal a big screen replay, then whistler decides. Simple.
BOK is always good for a clanger. Every Single Game. New heights to create a professional foul out of an arguable offside at worst.
Every non watching former player I know cites the refereeing and the spectacle as the two elephants keeping them out of the room. What does WR do?
Rolls out the Ben n Andrea Clown Show.
But be patient with Andrea. He was under a lot of unkind pressure – with 2 brands of fans AND Ben to appease. At least he was self aware enough to tell the world how he was ‘feeling’ while he marched marsupials to the outer paddock.
WR asks: What is wrong with Test rugby officiating?
A: Perth -Sept 2026.

BOK pushed that, Piardi should have reviewed it on the screen, I am not even sure he was offside, he got back and was run onside.
The other 2 yc’s were right, and before that he reffed really well IMO.

I disagree- he was super harsh on the breakdown at first then didn’t really care after a while and these high tackles are just really soft … the card festival at the end was ridiculous and what’s with the phone calls??

Sgt Pepperoni

Reply to  PeterK

Piardi was a slave to the TMO. The Hooker on Donaldson review was nonsense and the Sualii call was completely wrong. Many saying Etzebeth should not have been allowed back on the field, where was Piardi on that? I can remember that happened to the WBs in Argentina with TPN not allowed back on. The final stanza with 15-11 was a fiasco. Just as well we’d built up a lead because it wouldn’t have held much longer
