In three weeks we’ve come from kissing your sister in Argentina to avoiding a wharfie in Perth. Much like Hamlet this was a play in three acts, the only difference we didn’t lose our heads in the end.
Act 1 – the first twenty minutes of absolute tripe from the Wobblies. Suaalii gets up and takes the kickoff chase and lies on the ground saying “mine, mine, mine” and not letting go till Piardi intervenes. Donaldson knocks on a half-hearted attempt at catching a high ball, Jorgensen is penalised for holding on the ground, LSL and Lonergan can’t decide whose ball it is from a kickoff and let it bounce, Lonergan penalised for holding the ball leading to a maul try, Paenga-Amosa knocks on a pass not meant for him, McReight throws a poor pass, Donaldson throws a poor pass then backs it up with another one.
Act 2 – forty-five minutes of why we all watch rugby and why I am not allowed to watch it in my house. The scrum held solid, the lineout without a blemish, the backs looked like they knew what they were doing and the tries came.
Act 3 – The introduction of the Wallaby Wharfie.
Before the game I commented we needed to get out to a big halftime lead and then hold on as tight as possible when the bomb squad came on. That’s not quite how it panned out, we decided to sneak a late try and go in 7 points up, then when the bomb squad all landed at 47mins we upped the ante and ran in a couple more converted tries and Wilson opted for more three pointers. Leaving us 25 points up before the onset of Act 3.
What will become of the farce that was Etzebeth, lumbering around out of breath and replaced illegally at 64min, sent on at 67min, then at 74 minutes he took a kickoff and clutched his head, but had to get up the next phase in support, at 75 minutes he took the ball into contact and then after the ruck lay prone on the ground, to be replaced anew in the 76th minute. I’ll let you decide if that was an injury or just part of the act.

Player Ratings
Starting Team
- The Wallabies – 8. There were a couple of real stand out players but this was mainly a real team effort. The South African aerial dominance was not in play as the Wallaby kick chase and receipt was, while not perfect by a long shot, very much improved. It took them 20 minutes to get up to speed against a relentless South African defence but once they worked it out and maintained possession the points came.
- 1 Bell – 8. Constantly made the advantage line. Carried 11 times, beat 3 defenders. Only made 4 tackles, unfortunately missed 2 as well.
- 2 Paenga-Amosa – 7. Made 8 tackles, missed 1 and knocked on once. One lineout throw went too long and was lost.
- 3 Alaalatoa – 6. 3 tackles, 3 runs and penalised once.
- 4 Williams – 9. Stand out showing, 9 tackles, 6 carries, 6 lineout win including one steal and one almost steal that caused a turnover, defused a bok maul to win a scrum.
- 5 Salakaia-Loto – 7. 6 tackles, 6 carries, 1 offload, was in all the hard spots.
- 6 Valetini – 8. 10 carries, 4 defenders beaten, 6 tackles.
- 7 McReight – 8. 6 carries into contact. 9 tackles, 2 missed. Won two ruck penalties.
- 8 Wilson – 8. Would have been 9 but for a yellow card. 11 carries for 31m and a try. Team high 13 tackles no misses 3 of which were dominant. 6 lineout wins.
- 9 Lonergan – 8. Would have been 9 but for a yellow card. Found good long distance with his exit kicks from the 22. And good length for contestable kicks, especially one leading to Ikitau’s second try. Excellent distribution from the ruck base. 7 from 8 goal kicks.
- 10 Donaldson – 7. A shocker start but recovered well, I don’t do half points so rounded 6.5 up . .
- 11 Suaalii – 6. Was well involved on the wing more so than at centre. Really stood out as a 50/50 player in my eyes, took the first kick off but was penalised, chased a Lonergan kick and fortunately knocked it back into Ikitau’s arms for a try, caught 2 of the 6 high kicks he competed for, slapped back one and fumbled one backwards, penalised twice for holding on the ground. Got a harsh call for a yellow at the end that on my review looked like he did everything right, I’d like to hear O’Keeffes review of it.
- 12 Paisami – 5. 11 carries, 7 tackles, 1 miss. Good hard running, but blew the good work with a poor tackle at the end.
- 13 Ikitau – 9. The most involved we have seen from a number 13 this year. It was soon after he was injured that the game turned. 10 carries for 85 meters, 2 linebreaks, an offload and 5 defenders beaten, two tries. He’s a good 12 but our best 13.
- 14 Jorgensen – 9. Scored a try from turnover ball and pace. 13 carries for 106 meters, 4 linebreaks, an offload and 3 defenders beaten. Won 3 of the 5 high kicks he competed for. Penalised once for holding.
- 15 Tom Wrocks – 8. Back to a more jewellery oriented game. 8 runs for 46 meters, 4 defenders beaten, a couple of good kicks from hand for touch and grubber for Jorgensen.

Reserves & Staff
- 16 Pollard – 6. Did the yards while he was on but came up against a better scrum for the last 20.
- 17 Ross – 5. Drew the short straw and came up against a team who had just decided they didn’t want to lose.
- 18 Tupou – 5. 7 carries, 4 tackles, missed 2, penalised twice and was turned over in the 78th minute leading to their last try.
- 19 Shaw & 21 Tizzano – 6. Only got 12 or 13 minutes along side a slowly shrinking team. Well worth their post game beer.
- 20 Hooper – 7. Half an hour of action man.
- 23 Potter – 6. Couple of nice runs. Good defence at the end.
- The Coach – 8. Finally someone thought to try Suaalii on the wing, and gave Wilson the “how much is 3 points worth” talk. Didn’t bring on McDermott when he didn’t need to.
- The Referees – 8. Piardi was consistent throughout, consistently quick to penalise for 30 minutes at the start, consistently going for the pocket at the end. Got most calls right throughout and the ones he missed were only a call away.

OK I’ve done a late recount and taken a point off Suaalii for his repeated use of no look passes.
That’s a bit of a pet peeve for me. That was kind of unnecessary. He just needs to use his peripheral vision as he had already drawn the player.. he’s lucky it wasn’t called forward
That’s what I thought live too. Donaldson had to stretch for it.
Then another just after halftime that Williams could only get his fingertips to ended in a knock on
Was that a no looker as well? That would have put him into a huge gap too and they were out! The pass was just a tad out in front. And Williams wasnt quite ready .
What’s gonna happen when Mark Nawaqanitawase is available?
Already the likes of Pietch, Petaia and Daugunu and Kerevi are not being selected due to the depth in our backs.
Great headaches to have!
Hard to see where Marky Mark fits in atm. I guess he’ll have to play his way back into contention
Jorgo, pietsch, wright, JAS, Campbell, potter would have to be the front runners for the RWC.
Petaia and Daugunu both offer flexibility as the could play in the centre.
Marky offers match winning plays. I’d go for MN.
Sualii will go back to 13
I am hoping Wild Knights play Mark at Fullback, I see him as forcing his way somewhere into the back three. There’s also Perese to consider for the centers and both Pritchards. Backline is looking tasty to a degree. Just need some flyhalves to stay on pitch, and for a reserve scrumhalf to step up, though Tate may just need time on the field to regain his off the bench danger
You don’t fix a defender by looking straight ahead. You fix hime by hip and shoulder movement so he pauses slightly on the back heels thinking you are going to go inside him. That makes it hard to get across to the outside player who is going to get the ball. You look where you are going to pass.
Fair. He isn’t the best pass as it is, why make it harder by not looking.
Crowd a bit tough on the ref. He well & truly earned his tinnie with the comms going out. He did a good job there, especially with everything else going on at the time. Though his general play was not consistent with his early calls on jackals at the start then falling away into the game.
The TMO should be getting a 4, BO’K a 3 & the 4th/5th official a 2. They have one job to do after timing YC’s, that is to police the subs, which they failed. What a joke, to pull up the game for so long sorting out their mess & they still didn’t get it right? Each bench should have clear understanding of what subs are left & who is HIA or blood. They have a card system usually, so it should be all black & white. What we need to know is did the Bokke bench have any cards left? If not, Rassie was trying one on or was it a time wasting strategy to give his team some recovery time as he had emptied his bench 15-20 minutes earlier.
I agree on the crowd being tough on Piardi. He is not the issue, and has to ref within World Rugby guidelines. BOK seemed very confident on the JSA call. And I think Rassie was 100% trying one on the bloody genius haha
I read a thing about what Erasmus said after the game. He’s full of it. Acting dumb. Some one should pay harshly for that cheatery. But hardly a thing about it anywhere. Only citing was Pastrami
Agree. It was 100% intentional.
My opinion is the ref was dreadful and I give a 3 – dog’s breakfast, which is what I had the morning after the game.
Yeah, I wouldn’t have given him an 8
That one after half an hour with Bell when two saffers on the ground were both holding it and he called it a knock on
3 of the cards were correct, Suaalii was a head scratcher.
Etzebeth should have been carded for his injury stunt
JSA is far more effective on the wing. He has freedom to roam and is dominant in the air. He will contribute more than at centre where I play Heny and Lenny,.
Great minds, Henry/ikitau I cant wait to see
Coincidentally (or not) he was also more suited to wing in league, for essentially the same reason. He’ll always go looking for work (that’s his nature) so we might as well give him the extra space he gets out wide. And he has both the size and pace to handle whomever is opposite.
EDIT: Just noticed there’s also a PeterK – I’m am not.
Only one Peter K but welcome Kingy
I agree!
So did he catch the ball in league?
I agree and same with Marky mark. They tried him in the centre’s in league but moved him back to the wing.
Sualii never going to be a great finisher.Back to 13 for me..But he had a good game no doubt .
I imagine some people scoring didn’t realise McDermott never came on so gave him a score above 5.
The 2 sets of scores correlate fairly well with the exception of the ref.
I agree more with Mirt.
The ref was quite good and consistent. The 2 major blemishes was listening to BoK re YC on JAS when at worst it was a doubtful penalty, and not handling the Etzebeth fiasco better.
Yeah I have to do the poll before game, will get better at it. Ben can’t do much after Wallabies games, he’s generally half full
Can you add a n/a option or does it need to be numerical?
A simple fix I hadn’t thought of cheers!
Big thanks to Mirt for doing this!
Well done one and all
Low score Sualii he set tempo and intent early..Sin bin tough call so no point deduction there..Donno 6 at best really made tough going early.
Suaalii seems better suited to the wing, but with Ikitau injured and Paisami cited, he could be back in the 13 in a fortnight. He certainly set the tempo early, a penalty for holding on the ground in the first 20 seconds.
I must have rewound his yc about a dozen times and they all looked to have got back on side to me. Very unlucky
Caught kick off nobody followed him to secure..Set tone early its important.
Really hope Ikitau isn’t injured. Him and Henry in the centres would have been as good combo (if not better) then this weekend for me, and I did like JSA on the wing
I too would have had Henry and Ikitau.
If Ikitau is injured next game.
If Paisami isn’t suspended then I would have Paisami and Henry as the centres and keep JAS on the wing anyway. Actually I would have Pietsch on his wing and have JAS on the bench.
With Paisami and JAS as the centres the main strike weapon Jorgenson just doesn’t get the ball.
100% agree on all of that
If both are out, I’d like to see a Henry/Petaia combo, keeping JAS on the wing. It’s just a shame it’s an Eden Pk game to bring Jordie back in after so long out.
So he decided a penalty was better than letting them have the ball. Doesn’t cut the mustard
The holding on penalty was hardly his fault it was lazy chasers who weren’t there to clear out or even catch the ball if he knocked it back.
Agree I replayed that YC and it really looked like he got back on side, also with 2 other defenders there no way was it a yc. Bok really doesn’t like the wallabies.
I strive not to be critical of officials – much, much harder than it looks – but BOK makes it an easy case for keyboard warriors.
Good point ,the plan was for him too contest the kick off than nobody backs him up… Wallabies as usual.
Or Suaalii isolated himself with his pace as the others could keep up, therefore poor planning. Suaalii still could have let the ball go as the law stipulates, or maybe even stayed on his feet.
Yes he made a good effort to get there, but in the end he didn’t win the ball.
The penalty for holding on was more to do with the speed, or lack of, of the support players. JAS did his job, it was up to the others to secure it.
Also thought there was a BOK player in front of the jackler so could have been a penalty to Wobs
Probably should have been a yellow card
