Bok Blitz Looms as Wallabies Bank on a Bold Backline
Venue: Optus Stadium, Perth | Date/Time: 27 September, 7:45pm AEST | Referee: Andrea Piardi
The Lowdown
Rassie Erasmus has torn up the Baltimore blueprint. Fresh off beating the All Blacks 43-28 to claim the inaugural Rugby’s Greatest Rivalry trophy, the Boks coach has made 13 changes to that starting side — only Eben Etzebeth and Ethan Hooker keep their jerseys. Nine of the match-23 were involved in that Baltimore win, so this isn’t a second-string outfit, it’s a rotation with serious depth behind it.
The headline act is at captain. Andre Esterhuizen becomes the 68th man to lead South Africa, a hybrid centre-loose forward who’s earned the armband on the back of his form for the Sharks. Etzebeth, meanwhile, will take the field on 147 caps, extending his own record as the most-capped Springbok ever, while Malcolm Marx, the reigning World Rugby and SA Player of the Year, is six caps shy of triple figures off the bench. Jasper Wiese brings up his half-century of Tests the same way. Pieter-Steph du Toit and Damian de Allende have been sent home to rest, a nod to a brutal recent workload rather than any loss of form.
Across the field, Les Kiss has thrown a genuine curveball. Joseph-Aukuso Suaalii starts on the wing against the Springboks for the first time, Len Ikitau shifts out to outside centre, and Hunter Paisami, prized for his ability to carry the ball flat and still find the right option, partners him at 12. The bigger talking point is the bench: a 6/2 forwards-backs split, the first of the Kiss era(can someone find a previous game we did this). It loads up physicality for the closing stages but leaves Ben Donaldson without a recognised fly-half or fullback behind him, if he goes down, it’s Lonergan, Harry Wilson or Tupou stepping in on the fly.

Here’s the candid bit: the numbers actually flatter Australia. They’ve scored 30 tries in their last five outings to South Africa’s 16, with a +95 points differential against the Boks’ +17, and they’ve started fast, racing to 10 points first in all five. But that run came against Argentina, Japan and Italy, not the All Blacks three times running, which is South Africa’s recent diet. Add in the so-called Armageddon Squad waiting on the Springbok bench, Marx, Ox Nché, Lood de Jager and Wiese among them, and the form line looks a lot less one-sided than the try count suggests. History backs that read too: this fixture is 97 Tests deep, South Africa lead 53-41 with three draws, and remarkably, Perth itself has been dead even, 4 wins apiece with 2 draws across ten meetings here, though the Boks took the most recent one 30-12 in 2024.
South Africa, ranked world No. 1 to Australia’s No. 7, remain overwhelming favourites. Erasmus himself has been careful not to undersell the hosts, pointing out that Australia poses a completely different threat to New Zealand and arrives full of momentum, with physical forwards and an exciting backline of their own. Kiss, for his part, has leaned into the occasion, framing a Test against the top-ranked side in the world as exactly the kind of challenge that sharpens a group. Around the fanbase, the mood is split down the middle, genuine excitement about the new-look back three and Ikitau’s switch to 13, real nerves about that bare cupboard at fly-half, and at least one camp openly bracing for the Nuclear Bomb Squad to blow the game open in the last quarter.
Prediction
South Africa’s cap count, bench firepower and record of shutting down comebacks in this fixture make them the side to beat, even with the market trimming their price through the week. Australia’s line speed and early-game aggression should make this competitive into the third quarter, but the Boks’ extra gears late on should tell. Prediction: South Africa by 3 (though The Underdog while be howling for the opposite).

I just dont want the complaining and bitching about officials on the lives please fellas it ruins the game, of course if we are in front comfortably there won’t be any.
Canham out
LSL to start
Lachlan Shaw on the bench
Farcanal glad AFL is over for another year , unfortunately no gold for us in WA for those that do like it
Canham out injured,LSL partners Williams really had to drop Bobby to bench and bring in Hooper to starting 6..Big loss Canham.
Canham is a huge loss, I’m assuming Hooper for impact against bomb squad?
Who catches lineouts?
If he was going to do it off the bench we have to trust em to do it first up I guess
Legitimate question who is catching?
It’s not cricket
Well we did play with eleven..
Gee, I hope the crowd is at least 50:50. Not like last time where it seemed to be a fair percentage of Bokke fans. It just doesn’t seem right when you have a home match to not have majority of the support. Are we the only place in the world that this happens?
A hostile home crowd adds to the spectacle, as well as giving the home team an extra leg & keeping the ref on edge. A good example of this was the Wallaroos v the Frenchwoman last week. The pro French crowd made this game into a great game (even though they were a bit ignorant of high tackle laws & sanctions). The atmosphere was unreal when Holly Wood(ref) started dishing out the cards to the frogs. She didn’t blink & kept handing them out for high shots. The Frogs came back & won the game with depleted numbers- thanks to the crowd.
We will never get such support from an Australian crowd any more, unfortunately sad to see.
Wouldn’t be holding out too much hope the day after a dockers grandfinal.
I know the games are booked in advance but surely someone took a look and thought the day after the AfL gf was probably not a good idea in perth
I was at the game we post vs SBs at Suncorp in 2024 and the crowd was unbelievable. I was wondering where all these saffas had come from? Everywhere I think was the answer
Saying that there have been plenty of games in Aus vs NZ where the crowd is pro NZ
How about everyone else’s score predictions please .. if the A Team run on side boks Team was playing id go with what I said earlier boks by 17 but now boks by 10 but be awesome if we have a upset again
Wallabies by 5.
We talk about the upset thrashing last year as if it was an aberration, but seem to forget how close the two following games were and how easily they could have gone the other way.
The Wallabies have the ability to confound the Boks in a way the All Blacks don’t atm.
For sure quite possible, it’s going to be tough have to go 80, they seem to go better with jas on bench and TT has to put more effort in looks like hes going back to old self.
Think boks plan is to physically beat the opponent up no matter who it is and I say legally, hopefully I’m back in camp for kickoff
TTs old self did regular 70 minute monster efforts. Post injuries he’s only good for 25-30 now. I wish he could get back to his old self
TT I think lost his love for the game and his smile when playing the big minutes though. Him going all out knowing he is going to come off is better then him holding onto his energy
What the farcanal is wrong g with him mirt, it’s like hes saving himself for next match. Could be a real superstar he was brilliant for awhile
If Donadson goes down then Wright to 10 and JAS to 15 and Potter to wing.
The bigger issue would be the goal kicker since Lonergan can’t play 80 mins, and it is obvious Donaldson is expected to.
I am glad JAS has been moved to wing. However I would have had Henry at 12 rather than Paisami. Ikitau at 13 is a good move. T Hooper should be starting, Wilson out for Cale on the bench. I would have had Pietsch instead of Potter on the bench as well. However this is the best team Kiss has selected so far (given the injured players he can’t select).
Boks too strong, also far better aerially, AND Wallabies passive sliding defence will be exploited easily by the very fast bok backs.
I expect Boks to win by 20.
Cale injured but agreed in principle…
Petaia on the bench covers more positions than Potter or Pietsch. And that’s the ask with a 6-2 bench. Maybe Tizzano has been training in the centres, a poor man’s Esterhuizen. Imagine if we could actually field a fullback with skills like Barrett or McKenzie, and take away the need for always having a specialist 10 in the 22 or running this kind of 6-2 risk.
Ben you generally back the wallaby’s to win no matter are you worried about a backlash
I think we are travelling well, but our injuries at 10 have made us too disjointed to beat world no1 potentially.
It will be a very tough assignment for sure
Well the wallaby’s got the best chance playing a B Team come on wallaby’s, no 1 starting team are rooted after smashing the blacks , big rotation
Looks like a c string SBs team with a mega bomb squad in reserve if the wheels fall off. Reckon Kiss had been building up to this and now fields his strongest team (barring injury). I share concerns at ten but I reckon we’re battle hardened and could get over the line. Might be a nice little opportunity after the bruising AB series (best ever rugby ever greatest Trump series)
So is Wright the backup flyhalf or one of the centres?
😰
Harry Wilsonis backup 10 for me
I’m not convinced of Canham Williams lock pairing but they both have rugby brains but will have to use feet in the line get past gainline not we are cooked…fast recycle ball is out only chance..Hit hard in defence and don’t give away silly penalties and we are a live chance.
Luckily the blacks softened the boks up we have a real chance tomorrow
Softened? More like the blacks warmed them up. Boks got more dominant as the series progressed.
They totally smashed the allblacks gave them a major hiding physically yes.
That only highlight for me in the last test before the half 20 odd phases plus the blacks were getting smashed to a pulp on boks line…they were going backwards at a rate of knots but still scored that was something to watch
A bit light on with Canham and Williams the starting locks, it may affect the scrum. Not sold on Aidan Ross yet but who else is there. With Paisami at 12, Suaalii won’t see a lot of ball, only from kicks. Having no backup 10 is a gamble. I’m with Ben, Boks by 12.
Ross just has to hold his side up, though Wilco Louw won’t make it easy for him. the scrum fight will be Nche v Tupou which may get tipped by Marx. I reckon Aus will need a big halftime lead if they’re any chance
Fair call. The Boks bench is massive
I’m sure Len won’t let Hunter hog the ball. JAS is bound to be roaming and hopefully catching.Watching NRL games last w/e (I know,..) and I was impressed with the kick and arial skills. It’s really hard to understand why we can’t do as well in rugby. Is it that much of a different game, Will Marky play crap when he comes back? Coz that’s what seems to happen
“JAS is bound to be roaming” geez you’re ambitious. He’ll be more likely to be flat footed trying to remember where the system says he should be. He must have about a foot on van der Merwe so it’ll be interesting to see if his height can help when he’s stationary under a high ball and his opposition has a run up. Hopefully he’ll earn his $5m paycheck all in this game
Wallabies by 5.
Boks keep saying “we’re not underestimating them” which means they definitely are.
I wonder if I can sell the house before Sunday
Tizzano. Will he play with or for McReight
Bring out McTizz
Ikitau back to 13
6-2 bench
