About

About The Underdog

The Underdog is an independent Australian sports news site focused on informed reporting, sharp analysis, and honest conversation.

We cover Australian sport first — from rugby union and league to AFL, cricket, football, and beyond — with room for international context where it matters. Our priority is the story, not the noise around it.

What we do

  • Publish original sports journalism, news, and analysis
  • Provide space for informed opinion and debate
  • Highlight stories, players, and issues that don’t always get the spotlight

We’re interested in performance, selection, tactics, governance, and the decisions that shape sport — not outrage for its own sake.

Independence matters

The Underdog is not owned by a club, league, betting company, or media conglomerate. That independence allows us to call things as we see them and focus on the substance of sport rather than the incentives around it.

Editorial Standards & Fact-Checking

The Underdog is committed to providing independent, accurate, and substance-driven sports journalism. We prioritize rigorous analysis over reactionary outrage.

  • Sourcing: We rely on primary sources, official match footage, governing body statements, and on-the-record interviews. We do not publish unverified rumors, gossip, or speculative “clickbait” as factual news.
  • Opinion vs. Reporting: We clearly distinguish between our objective match reports and our subjective opinion pieces or tactical analysis.
  • Independence: As an independent outlet, our editorial decisions are not influenced by clubs, leagues, betting agencies, or corporate sponsors.

Corrections Policy

Accuracy is paramount to our reporting. While we strive to ensure all information is correct at the time of publishing, errors can occasionally occur in the fast-paced environment of sports media.

If a factual error is discovered in an article, The Underdog is committed to correcting it promptly and transparently. We will update the text of the article and append a clear “Correction” or “Update” note at the bottom of the page, detailing what was changed and when.

If you spot an error in our reporting, please reach out to us at whistle@theunderdog.news.

Community and discussion

Sport invites disagreement. We welcome it — provided it’s informed, respectful, and plays the ball, not the man. Abuse, bigotry, and bad-faith engagement have no place here.

Founder

Founder & Editor-in-Chief: Ben Casey

The Underdog was founded by Ben, an outback country publican, professional entertainer, and independent sports analyst with a lifelong dedication to Australian sport—particularly rugby union.

While his days of packing down in the scrum are behind him, Ben has channeled decades of grassroots rugby experience and deep tactical knowledge into independent sports journalism. Frustrated by the noise and clickbait of mainstream media, he launched The Underdog to provide informed reporting, clear-eyed analysis, and honest conversation.

Today, Ben serves as the lead writer and Editor-in-Chief of the platform, delivering weekly match breakdowns, Super Rugby insights, and independent commentary to a growing community of thousands of fans across Australia and the globe. He is committed to covering the substance, governance, and tactics that shape the game, holding the sport to a higher standard.
