Match Report: Wallabies 21 v 43 All Blacks

Brutal All Blacks Bury Bumbling WallaBies as Beauden Bags a Bledisloe Brace

Over 80,000 packed Accor Stadium for the finale of a first-of-its-kind quadruple-header, with the Cup already lost after last week’s 50-19 shellacking at Eden Park. That result kept the Bledisloe across the ditch for a 23rd straight year. Les Kiss walked into this series unbeaten as coach, with five wins and a draw from six Tests. He walks out with a record 13th straight loss to New Zealand and what he called a brutal reality check. Twisting the knife, the opposition coach was Dave Rennie, sacked by Rugby Australia four years ago. Rennie’s All Blacks were missing Jordie Barrett (calf), Ardie Savea, Richie Mo’unga and Ruben Love, then lost Quinn Tupaea to concussion early.

None of it mattered.

First Half

For ten minutes the Wallabies were the better side. Max Jorgensen sliced through three times in the opening quarter-hour, but Beauden Barrett snuffed out the first break one-on-one. On another, Jorgo backed himself rather than feed an unmarked Tom Wright. Then the game turned on him. In the 11th minute he rushed out of the line chasing an intercept that never came, and Josh Moorby dummied Joseph-Aukuso Suaalii and slipped Rob Valetini to score.

What followed was a point-a-minute blitz. Barrett crashed over Declan Meredith at 16 after Damian McKenzie’s interlink sent Peter Lakai through. At 20, Cam Roigard’s double pump let Moorby punch through and offload in the lead-up, and Lakai powered over from close range to make it 17-0. At 25, Fabian Holland pinched Josh Nasser’s lineout, the hooker’s only miss of the night (albeit the Wallabies competed against the throw infrequently), and Rieko Ioane scored in his favourite corner.

Jeremy Williams finished off a Meredith link at 28. Two minutes later he was binned for an offence near his own line, a call plenty of Wallabies fans felt deserved a look from the TMO. The All Blacks barely scrummed in the first half, yet a five-metre scrum at 31 minutes was all Wallace Sititi needed, breaking off the back and beating Ryan Lonergan comfortably. With Australia kicking ball away aimlessly and unable to contain the offloads, the climax was cruel. On the stroke of half-time Barrett picked off Jorgensen’s pass and outran Wright: 36-7.

Second Half

Moorby dummied Jorgensen for a walk-in inside a minute of the restart, and at 43-7 a record trans-Tasman hiding loomed. Then the hosts found some go-forward. Plenty of supporters put that down to finally holding on to the ball instead of kicking it away. Angus Bell replaced Aidan Ross at the break, and Wright crossed at 53. Replacement Filipo Daugunu followed at 65, with Meredith converting. Meredith was also denied a try of his own at one stage by a last-ditch Barrett tackle that jolted the ball loose. He limped off around 70, handing Harry McLaughlin-Phillips his debut as Wallaby No. 1001.

Frizell’s injury left New Zealand short, and Chay Fihaki’s yellow at 75 for a tackle on Suaalii made it worse. They never scored after the 43rd minute. Australia had 68 per cent of the ball in the final ten and still came up empty. Winning the second half 14-7 is a consolation, not a result.

The Individuals

  • Peter Lakai: Best on ground. He made a match-high 18 carries and 15 tackles, won an early turnover in his own 22, made multiple first-half line breaks and scored a try. No Ardie, no problem.
  • Beauden Barrett: Reports of his decline were greatly exaggerated. Two tries, 10 points, three line breaks, a turnover won and the try-saver on Meredith. Vintage Beaudy.
  • Fabian Holland: A match-high 24 tackles, two dominant hits and the lineout steal that became a try. Wallaby carriers bounced off him all night.
  • Damian McKenzie: He kicked all four of New Zealand’s conversions from seven attempts. His real damage came out the back of the pods, where he was involved in around half a dozen line breaks.
  • Declan Meredith: Australia’s best in just his fourth Test start at No. 10. He set up a try, came close to scoring one and showed real ambition. Three turnovers lost and a shaky boot keep the jury out.
  • Max Jorgensen: Seven line breaks and five turnovers lost, both the most on the field. He also threw the pass Barrett picked off to seal the half. Brilliant and costly in equal measure.

Where It Was Won

1. Ball security, not ball movement. Australia beat New Zealand on almost every measure of going forward:

  • Carries: 192 to 162
  • Post-contact metres: 182 to 113
  • Line breaks: 17 to 16

Yet they lost 19 turnovers to 10. From eight 22 entries they averaged 2.6 points, while New Zealand averaged 4.8 from nine. They need to find the killer edge.

2. Set-piece sucker punches. The Wallabies won 90 per cent of their lineouts, but the one they lost became Ioane’s try. The All Blacks barely scrummed in the first half, yet a five-metre scrum at 31 minutes was all Sititi needed. Two set pieces, 12 points.

3. A wall that wouldn’t budge. Australia owned 54 per cent of possession and 56 per cent of territory. The All Blacks made 196 tackles to 159, with Holland and Scott Barrett making 46 between them. At the other end, Australia conceded nine tries and 55 points in 55 minutes of play across the two Tests. That number should alarm Kiss and defence coach Scott McLeod.

What Next?

Kiss framed the gap as sixth in the world against second, and his top-four ambition now rides on a Nations Championship spring tour where every Test counts. Australia’s fixtures:

  • England at Allianz Stadium, Twickenham: Monday 9 November, 1:10am AEST
  • Scotland at Scottish Gas Murrayfield: Monday 16 November, 1:10am AEST
  • Wales at the Principality Stadium: Sunday 22 November, 6:10am AEST

Len Ikitau’s injury and Hunter Paisami’s suspension leave the midfield threadbare, and Suaalii’s defence is under the microscope. Supporters are also weary of hearing what lessons another New Zealand loss offers.

The All Blacks play every tour Test at 12:10am AEST:

  • Scotland at Murrayfield: Sunday 8 November
  • Wales in Cardiff: Sunday 15 November
  • England at Twickenham: Sunday 22 November

They want Jordie, Savea and Tupaea back, and a bench that adds more than it did during Sydney’s scoreless final 37 minutes.

Scorers

Wallabies 21

  • Tries: Jeremy Williams (28 min), Tom Wright (53 min), Filipo Daugunu (65 min)
  • Conversions: Ryan Lonergan (29 min, 54 min), Declan Meredith (66 min)
  • Penalties: Nil
  • Yellow Card: Jeremy Williams (30 min)

All Blacks 43

  • Tries: Josh Moorby (11 min, 42 min), Beauden Barrett (16 min, 40 min), Peter Lakai (20 min), Rieko Ioane (25 min), Wallace Sititi (31 min)
  • Conversions: Damian McKenzie (21 min, 32 min, 41 min, 43 min)
  • Penalties: Nil
  • Yellow Card: Chay Fihaki (75 min)

Interesting stats.I know stats are lies and more lies but – of 95 wins/loses v Springboks, we won 42 (44%) and Springboks won 53 (56%). Of 174 win/loses v All Blacks, we one 45 (26%) and All Blacks won 129 (74%). We all know in sport, some teams have the wood on others. NZ has the wood on us.

Feel for the younger fans who have never seen a Wallaby side come even close to winning a Bledisloe Cup in this 23 year drought.

I think a strong latent support for the Wallabies will always be there – most Australian sporting fans realise that unlike AFL and NRL rugby union is truly an international game. Its as pity the Wallabies and our SR teams by and large give them so little to cheer about and be proud off.
League journalists and plenty of league supporters gleefully sink the boot in and denigrate the Wallabies. Its not very pleasant and IMO genuinely un-Australian but at least from the journalists I understand the commercial driver.
Saturday was tough for all of us supporters. Not nice to be humiliated but at least for us oldies we can go back to the 80s and 90s when we won a few times (took plenty of pastings by the way, remember Wellington in 96?). Fans younger than 35 really have no memory of those good times or big wins. Hopefully they will sooner rather than later.

Why did NZ rack up a big score in the first half but not the second? Why did the Wallabies win the second half 14 to 7? There is nothing magical here. Both sides had fast ruck ball. Morby’s try was a trick of deception and don’t count it because that kind of thing is rare. Williams yellow was wrong and NZ then scored. Don’t count that. So subtract 14 from 43 = 29. The score doesn’t look that bad. The difference was our defense in the first half. Porous, not up fast and not together. NZ came up quick in the second half and if we did the same in the first half, the score would not have been what it was. I don’t think we should be too despondent when you consider all these things.

Another week, another bitter pill to swallow.

A few observations

  1. When we have close to our best team on the park, we are competitive. Sadly, the drop down to players like Aidan Ross (from Bell), Nasser (from BPA), MDL (from AAA) just to name three is too much.
  2. Loved that Declan Merideth tried to control the game, probably more than any other no.10 has done for a long time. Does he make a solid backup for Carter Gordon if they aren’t going to consider bringing Noah back or using JOC/Beale?
  3. Kalani has jumped way ahead of Tate for now. Suggest the three for the NH tour are now Loners, Kalani and Teddy Wilson.
  4. LSL has very little impact for a big man. So wish they would consider bringing Rhoda and Hooper in for the NH tour. These two plus Canham and Williams would give us a solid foundation.
  5. Serious thought needs to be given to having both Carlos and Fraser starting. Teams have found out how to nullify one, but could they nullify both at the same time? Would need to have higher workrate from teh locks and props for this to happen though.

I doubt you will see McReight and Tizzano on at the same time…that is a bad move, similar players and opposition would absolutely hammer them. Your 6 needs to be 6’6” 115+, see Tom Hooper, Va’i, Peter Steph…when you don’t have that fella at 6 there are issues. A good big man is better than a good little man

luckyphil

The issue is Valetini isn’t that person and LSL isn’t Will Skelton or Eben. In the abscence of Tom Hooper we get hammered at the breakdown.

Ideally if all fit we could have:
Locks: Will Skelton and Jeremy Williams with Canham on the bench
6/8: Hooper and Wilson with Valetini on the bench.
This would allow McReight to be the only 7.

Sadly we don’t so need to find another solution.

yeah, Tom Hooper is massive for you blokes. there is a significant difference when he is not there. 6’6″, over 120Kg. He is gaining valuable experience overseas, can hit like a truck and is a hella thing to tackle if he finds a bit of space. Always makes me nervous when I see him, particularly on the bench. Tizzano not so much…I actually look at that and think, happy days, little fella, plenty of ticker, good on the deck, get a couple of turnovers on a good day but confident in a WC knock out game Bok pack will blow him off the park. Hooper, brother goes toe to toe, he is the real deal. Valetini is a huge talent, I know he struggled to get big go forward in these last two games, but he is a very good player, would make a lot of international sides.

LSL to slow around the paddock need Canham fit for sure…Nasser too small,Tizzano Fraser combo interesting concept as you can’t get the ball back with defence like that,my only caveat would be getting over gainline would be difficult but clever passes on D line could suffice and our defence around edges would be better but honestly we have players who simply aren’t aggressive enough and allow too much yardage..

Because Rassie is using Aus to experiment with players and style, paid for it twice but appears happy to, to have a look at what he wants/needs to. Still 4 from 6 since the last World Cup and after the shellacking he gave Aus in Aus in 2024 he really pushed the experimentation with Aus, too much. Last game was 13 changes in the starting side ffs…not a bad side but continuity is a thing. 5, even 6 changes in the starting 15 is a lot, 13 is a nonsense

There is no other team in world rugby that has had the issues SA has since re admission. Since Rassie has taken over there has been a drastic improvement and some of that not due to him at all with many black players now well deserving of their spots. Prior to that there were huge issues in selection, both in players and coaches along racial lines.

Because it was the South African B team.

The Springboks have a lot of depth but that still doesn’t mean the B team is the same level as the A team and aren’t used to playing together as a unit all the time either.

Yeah, but the bloke running the thing is happy to pay that price, in his words, no point putting those blokes on when your 20 ahead, want to see them away from home 20 behind, that’s when you find out who’s who. The thing is it is somewhat unfair for those blokes when they have not played for 2 months and then further not as a unit ever. But the big dog has to man manage also, these blokes are doing plenty in training, want a shot, so as a head coach…you can’t keep everybody happy (players/fans) and if you try you’ll fail anyway.

These are crumbs from the table, but one’s that NH opposition will take notice of.

Was 2H too little too late or a never say die?

Soft AB bench or a superior WBs bench? Daugunu and Bell owned the 2H, setting up the linebreaks by each sucking in 3 ABs before offloading/going to ground.

Intelligent ball retention vs world best defending. 2H only i agree, but enough to show it can be done.

Turning point in Meredith’s career?

Tizz/MCR double act showed added value.

Utter drivel in 1H but NH opponents cannot replicate that AB style.

France buggerize around, they rarely put out a full-strength side between world cups, almost never away from home, their club rugby is a thing around that. France, at full strength in the WC will be a thing. They were the best team in the last one/2023. And Argentina has beaten the ABs to mate…including in NZ.

You could put say 10 current wallaby’s singularly into the allblack team and they wouldn’t miss a beat so it’s still deep rooted long term failures that I will say it again and again no one coach can fix. It has to be mental hurdles and rugby Australia’s failures..
I’m not bagging the team alot of top players in it but enough is enough just talk straight about it its been too long now to just go with the flow

You set this team up to fail. Nations Cup goal should be reaching and solidifying 5th ranked.

This All Black team could become favourites to win the World Cup. Not because they’re that good, but in the absence of real opposition.

South Africa have coasted for a decade against weak All Black and Wallaby teams and are beatable by a well put together New Zealand team even if the actual playing talent isn’t what it was.

A big forward pack to stop the Springbok behemoths with the excellent Roigard/Mckenzie combination (obvious for a long time as the best choice together) and it could be enough.

I think they have tremendous depth and is well documented now it wont matter too much the line up in allblacks, alot of newish talent set to unleash they deserve credit and Dave Rennie the reject coach is the master.
Les Kiss was always going to fall off the honeymoon run yes a good win against south Africa but his early tests in charge were reasonably soft wins and Argentina should of done better.
Meanwhile it will be all quiet from HQ as always, jas has forced fans on here to show a bit of honesty and acknowledge hes not fit for this team and hinders the backline.
Wallaby’s have quite a few top quality players throughout the team but it’s still the same old syndrome the tom Wright mistakes and soft tackles and options outweigh the pluses, the kicking out on the full etc etc the mistakes under pressure trying to play catch up, jas,
Yesterday’s backline masters had a very poor game while in other tests they look superstars.
I rate the forwards highly international standard right up there with the rest Williams massive they just cant go the distance and concentrating for 80 and fall apart after being dominated its too late by then.
Surely we can all see it and not dress mutton up as ham.
The Northern games will be a tough assignment and if honest Les Kiss is not the right man

In all seriousness, it was the AB’s that didn’t go the distance in yesterday’s game whereas the WB’s didn’t in the first game. Yesteryear AB sides would’ve put on 60 from that position.
Or maybe, Kiss made adjustments &/or the WB’s stepped up in the 2nd half.

Crucial difference in 9 and 10 at the moment. A huge gulf in class between the Wallabies and opposition and refusal to choose JOC or Beale means no escape.
I thought Suaalii did much better at wing in the open spaces that suit him but has now been shunted back to centre with injuries just as the experiment was getting going.

Ultimately there’s no great team in the world today so it shouldn’t be impossible to get to the top.

it is obvious wing or f/b are the best positions for JAS, he is a detriment to the team at 13 IMO. When Henry debuted at 13 he played better than JAS did there.

Currently I would have Jorgenson and Pietsch as the wingers and JAS on the bench. Why Pietsch can’t make the team ahead of Potter is beyond me.

I’m starting to think maybe a couple of extra yards of space for Suaalii at fullback might be what he needs. At the moment he doesn’t take on the line enough. Because his first reaction is to stop and see where everyone is at. By then they’re on him and he has only the option of a basketball pass left.

Chieka may be the one to put him there, but maybe he needs someone like Folau in the squad to teach him what to do, because this mythical athletism he has hasn’t got him far yet

JAS was touted as better than Folau but he hasn’t come close to him in attack, nor aerial abilities.

As I replied to LRO Folau played his best for the tahs when he played f/b last year, he was very good.

He may be worth a try at inside simply to see if he can punch it up stay upright and offload.. Defensively it’s a tighter space to defend in and can get away with moving up and taking his man without massive repercussions like 13 has if you mistime.
